- Jim Kaat was coming off an all-star season and had finished 4th in AL Cy Young Award voting in 1975.
- Kaat was 12-14 with a 3.48 ERA for the Phillies in 1976. He also won a Gold Glove award.
- Jim was a starter for the Phillies in 1977 (6-11, 5.39 ERA) and in 1978 (8-5, 4.10 ERA).
- Kaat was sold to the New York Yankees early in the 1979 season.

1976 was a great time to be a Phillies fan. The nucleus of Carlton-Schmidt-Luzinski-Boone-Bowa had been together for several years, they had acquired Tug McGraw and Dick Allen in mid-1975, and now added pitchers Jim Kaat and Ron Reed before the 1976 season. Result: Their first post-season appearance since 1950!
